In municipal drinking water and industrial fluid transportation projects, the choice of pipeline corrosion protection directly determines the safety and service life of the project. In drinking water projects, the greatest concerns are toxic coatings and bacterial growth; in industrial pipelines, the greatest concerns are corrosion from chemical media, high-temperature erosion, or high-intensity mechanical wear.

I. What Is a Double-Layer Epoxy Coating?

The FBE-coated steel pipes we commonly refer to—if they are single-layer—have excellent adhesion, but because the coating is relatively thin, they are prone to dents and scratches during transportation, hoisting, or when backfilled with sand and gravel underground.

Double-layer epoxy technology is like putting “two layers of clothing” on the steel pipe:

  • Base layer (base FBE): Sprayed directly onto the steel pipe’s surface, it bonds at the molecular level. Its primary function is to firmly adhere to the pipe, block moisture and oxygen, and provide core corrosion protection.

  • Outer Layer (Modified FBE): Applied immediately while the base layer is still curing. This layer has been specially modified to become extremely hard, providing resistance to impact, scratches, and soil stress, while also enhancing temperature resistance.

These two layers fuse into a single unit at high temperatures, combining strong corrosion resistance with a tough outer shell, thereby overcoming the vulnerability of single-layer epoxy coatings to impact and abrasion.

1. Drinking Water Sector: Safe, Clean, and Low-Resistance

The tap water supplied to households places extremely demanding requirements on the inner walls of pipes.

  • Non-toxic and Hygienic: After curing, the double-layer epoxy powder coating is highly stable, contains no substances harmful to humans, and does not release odors into the water, meeting strict domestic and international drinking water hygiene and safety standards.

  • No Rust Buildup: Over time, traditional pipes develop rust and scale on their inner surfaces, which can harbor bacteria. The interior of these corrosion-resistant pipes is as smooth as a mirror, making it difficult for bacteria to adhere. This not only ensures water quality but also allows water to flow more smoothly, helping pumping stations save significantly on electricity costs.

2. Industrial Applications: Wear Resistance, Erosion Resistance, and Chemical Resistance

In industrial settings such as chemical plants, power plants, and mines, a wide variety of substances flow through the pipes.

  • Resistance to Industrial Corrosion: Whether it’s acidic or alkaline wastewater, brine, or common chemical media, the double-layer epoxy coating provides effective isolation and protection.

  • Wear Resistance: If industrial fluids contain sand particles or slag, high-velocity flow can cause significant wear on pipe walls. The outer layer of the double-layer FBE coating is highly durable and can effectively withstand long-term abrasion from such particulates.

While a good anti-corrosion process is essential, the quality of the base pipe is equally critical. This is especially true for large-diameter, high-pressure transmission projects, where the geometric dimensions of the steel pipe—as the base material—must be precise, and the weld quality must be top-notch.

  • Reliable Weld Quality: The submerged arc welding process (whether for longitudinal or spiral seams) is characterized by deep welds, good ductility, and strong crack resistance, enabling the pipes to withstand the high pressures of large-diameter pipelines.
